PETALING JAYA: Intel Malaysia and Packet One Networks (P1) have unveiled the first WiMAX-ready 4G laptops to the local market.
With WiMAX-based laptops now available, users no longer have to stay within a WiFi area to be connected to the Internet, the companies said.
The WiMAX-based laptops are available from six original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) - namely Acer, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, MSI and Toshiba. These companies have announced new notebooks and netbooks that are based on Intel Core and Intel Atom processors.
The notebooks and netbooks feature the dual-mode Intel Centrino Advanced-N+ WiMAX 6250 embedded solution, which has been certified and ready for use on the P1 WiMAX network.
The dual-mode module Advanced-N+ WiMAX 6250 solution has an integrated WiMAX/WiFi adapter that supports 2.3GHz, 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz WiMAX frequencies and delivers up to 20Mbps speed.
One of the WiMAX-based notebooks that have been made available here is the Lenovo IdeaPad V360. This model is powered by an Intel Core i3-350 processor and comes pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium.
It is equipped with 2GB DDR3 SDRAM and a 500GB hard disk. Other specifications include nVidia GeForce 305M DDR3 512MB graphics, 13.3in HD LED screen, six-cell lithium-ion battery and a one-year regional carry-in warranty.
The V360 costs RM2,599 and it comes with a six-month P1 WiMAX service plan worth RM634. If you want a netbook
If you are looking for a WiMAX-ready netbook instead, MSI has the U135 model that is powered by an Intel Atom 450 processor and runs Windows 7 Starter Edition.
Other specifications include a 250GB hard disk, 1GB DDR2 RAM and integrated Intel GMA 3150 graphics.
The 10.1in netbook runs on a six-cell battery that offers up to six and a half hours of battery life, MSI said.
The U135 retails at RM1,349, and is available with a three-month P1 WiMAX service worth RM367.
Another netbook is the Acer Aspire One 533. It comes with an Intel Atom N455 processor, 250GB hard disk, 1GB RAM, 10.1in TFT LCD screen and Windows 7 Starter Edition.
