MACC officer watched porn after grilling Teoh

http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews/Malaysia/Story/A1Story20110401-271225.html
KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officer watched pornography on his office computer soon after he helped a colleague interrogate political aide Teoh Beng Hock, the Commission of Inquiry was told.

Commission chairman Federal Court judge Tan Sri James Foong told former Selangor MACC deputy director Hishamuddin Hashim that Mohd Ashraf Mohd Yunus had been watching smut on his office computer at about 1.20am on July 16, 2009.

This was based on a forensic analysis of the officer's computer which was seized by the commission.

The assistant enforcement officer had been watching pornography while intensive investigation operations against Seri Kembangan assemblyman Ean Yong Hian Wah over alleged fraudulent disbursement of state funds was going on.

When asked by Justice Foong how this could have been allowed to happen, Hishamuddin, who is now the Negri Sembilan MACC director, said it was beyond his control.

"It is not work-related. If it happened in front of me, I would have reprimanded him," said Hishamuddin.

Justice Foong said it was surprising that MACC officers watched pornography at their workplace in spite of the Government order prohibiting civil servants surfing pornography in government offices.

It was also revealed that Mohd Ashraf had been positively identified in 13 police identification parades for alleged use of force during questioning.

Hishamuddin also admitted that the Selangor MACC had not lodged any police report after Teoh's remains had been discovered.

"What is the point in making police reports 10 times or 40 times?" Hishamuddin said, adding that a single report was sufficient for investigations to be carried out.

He also stated that Teoh had ceased being under the MACC's responsibility after 3.30am on July 16, 2009, as he had been told to go home.

To this, commissioner Datuk T. Selventhiranathan said Teoh was the MACC's responsibility as his body was found at the building where the state MACC office was located.

Hishamuddin was also chided by Justice Foong for being defensive and emotional when questioned by Bar Council lawyer Cheow Wee.

Teoh, who was Ean Yong's political secretary, was taken to the state MACC office on the 14th floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam on July 15, 2009 for questioning over the allegations against his boss.

He was found dead at the building's fifth floor service corridor the following day.

The inquiry resumes tomorrow.

Malaysia's first gay film a box office hit

http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/Showbiz/Story/A1Story20110331-271141.html
KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysia's first gay-themed movie has been a hit at the box office but an official from the conservative Islamic party Thursday called for it to be banned despite its anti-homosexual ending.

"Dalam Botol" ("Inside a Bottle") raked in one million ringgit (S$417,600) in the first five days, making it a local hit, the Star daily reported, despite Malaysia's conservative views on homosexuality.

The movie, which opened on March 24, features a gay male character who has a sex-change operation to please his lover but finally regrets the procedure. It ends with him falling in love with a girl.

Although the movie has a gay theme, producer Raja Azmi Raja Sulaiman said she regarded it as a warning to the public about homosexual culture.

"For me, this film is my soapbox to remind society not to be influenced by gay culture, which is considered taboo in this country," Raja Azmi told the Star.

In Malaysia, positive depictions of homosexuality in popular culture are taboo with local media facing fines of up to 50,000 ringgit (about $17,000).

Sodomy, even between consenting adults, is illegal and punishable by up to 20 years in prison and lashing.

Although the movie ends with the lead character opting for a heterosexual relationship, Hatta Ramli, senior opposition lawmaker from the conservative Pan-Malaysia Islamic Party (PAS), told AFP that films depicting gay lifestyles should not be shown to the public.

"I do not understand why we expose such movies to the people. We do not need such movies.

"We should focus our attention to resolve other more pressing issues like drug taking," he added.

Last October, PAS urged authorities to cancel a concert by gay American singer Adam Lambert. The show went ahead, but party activists protested outside.

Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is on trial for sodomy.

Anwar has said he is the victim of a plot to prevent him from taking power after the opposition made huge strides in 2008 elections, stunning the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power for half a century.

Join the hunt for much higher salaries

http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2011/3/1/nation/8158478&sec=nation
PETALING JAYA: Headhunting is the way to go for those aiming for a salary upgrade.

Firms will normally offer salaries that are 25% to 30% higher to attract talent from their competitors.

“That is the norm. Usually, high salary hikes are seen when a sought-after employee joins another firm,” headhunter Reza Ghazali said.

Reza, who heads the Malaysian chapter of multinational headhunter firm, Korn/Ferry International said average salary increments usually ranged from 7% to 10% to hedge against inflation.

“International developments such as oil prices and the situation in North Africa may also affect a firm’s ability to provide a generous salary increment across the board,” he added.

The Star reported yesterday that wage increases of between 5% and 30% are expected in many key industries this year, partially influenced by inflation rates and market conditions.

This was based on the findings released by the Robert Walters Global Salary Survey 2011 for Malaysia.

The survey also indicated that the job market has gradually moved to become more employee-driven. Some firms are even willing to offer premiums to attract good local and foreign talent with niche skills.

A group of business application consultants from an international firm said they were surprised that their professional wages ranged from RM100,000 to RM150,000 in the survey.

The consultants, with three to five years of work experience, said their salary only ranged from RM65,000 to RM110,000 for 2010.

“There is a huge gap between the actual and surveyed figures,” said one of them who wished to be known only as Sue.
