未富先老: 好低俗的一则广告

有妇女界投诉，目前正铺天盖地而来的一则广告“你割咗未啊”，意识不良。
完全同意，而且对这个“创意”非常厌恶。
第一次看到就很惊讶，为什么对广告管制想当严格的 我国，竟会出现如此暧昧的台词和如此鄙俗的肢体动作。
第一个反应就是不要看，它一出现就转台，但是出现的频率实在太多，避也避不了。
男女演员的台词和动作，毫无疑问地要引导观众掉入陷阱，想到是“割兰叫”。
然而，如果你真的这么想，他们就如获至宝，大声笑你：“这是因为你头脑肮脏，想到歪处。其实，我们是讲……”
这是市井小瘪三耍嘴皮，最适合《鹿鼎记》中那个妓院出生的韦小宝 来耍，不适合我们这个还算有点品味的社会。这则广告对儿童的影响不小，恐怕会形成韦小宝习性。
把一句自以为很得意的“割咗未”重复又重复，到底为什么要割，到底卖的是什么膏药，恕我愚昧，至今还看不懂，只在猜：——
是不是有什么古老王国的宫廷要招募太监？
是不是印度的第三种人社群要广招会员？
是不是有犹太教的传教士潜进来招收信徒？
如果比广告创意，年前环宇电视的那个“睇咗啦！”是精品。现在的这个“割咗未”是糟粕。

WiWi answer to last-mile headaches

PETALING JAYA: Three WiMAX licensees are deploying “WiWi” — a hybrid of WiMAX and WiFi wireless broadband technologies — developed by applied-research institute Mimos Bhd.
The licensees are Redtone International Bhd, Packet One Networks (P1) Sdn Bhd and Asiaspace Sdn Bhd. They are three of the four WiMAX licensees in the country.
Datuk Abdul Wahab, Mimos president and chief executive, said WiWi is a more feasible and cheaper alternative for last-mile connectivity. “It enables the users of WiFi to connect to the Internet at WiMAX broadband speeds,” he added.
“Last mile” refers to the final segment between an Internet or communications service provider’s infrastructure and a subscriber’s premises. The gap is traditonally bridged by a wired connection, such as copper phone lines.
In recent years, service providers have turned to wireless technologies to bridge the gap, since copper lines are more expensive to lay and sometimes aren’t feasible, such as in the case of isolated communities.
Mimos’ WiWi technology takes the wider coverage of a WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) setup and links it to the cheaper WiFi (Wireless Fidelity) system to make the last-mile connection.
Using WiMAX technology exclusively would be very expensive at this point in time, while WiFi just doesn’t have the broadcast reach for such an expansive application.
Also, most computers and other Internet-enabled gadgets now are set up for WiFi connections instead of WiMAX, the specifications of which are still being standardised.
Boost the gain
“WiWi provides plug-and-play broadband hotspots and can enable multiple PCs to access the Internet via a single WiFi connection,” said Abdul Wahab.
He said it will also be easier, cheaper and faster to connect hotels, universities, schools, convention centres and rural communities to wireless broadband with WiWi.
Mimos also claimed that WiWi’s multicasting capability enables the technology to support high-quality Internet Protocol TV services.
Michael Lai, chief executive officer of P1, said the company sees much merit in using the hybrid technology to help bridge the “digital divide,” that gap between the technology haves and have-nots in the country.
“We will try it at the P1 Community Broadband Centre (CBC) in Chini Timur, Pahang,” he said. P1’s CBC was developed as a proof-of-concept telecentre for underserved areas.
On the other hand, Asiaspace and Redtone are looking at deploying WiWi in urban centres and will only take it to the rural areas later.

Three WiMAX firms warned

KUALA LUMPUR: The three companies holding WiMAX licences that have yet to roll out their services nationwide have been warned they risk losing their licences.
Information, Communication and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim said yesterday the Government had the right to revoke their licences if the companies did not roll out their services by year-end, especially to Sabah and Sarawak.
The terms of their licences required it, he noted.
“They have to show proof why their licences should not be revoked by end of the year if they do not fulfil their responsibility as required by their licences,” he said after the 1Malaysia Seminar here on Thursday.
Rais said he had instru cted industry regulator, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, to look into the issue and review the licences of the three companies.
But the three p layers told Star Biz they had been following the rules and saw no reason for their licences to be revoked.
Four companies were in 2007 awarded the 2.3GHz spectrum, allowing them to offer wireless broadband services using WiMAX technology.
The four are Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, REDtone International Bhd, YTL e-Solutions Bhd and Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd.
The Government has set a target to have 50% national broadband penetration rate in the country by end-2010 and Rais’ concern is understandable as without full participation of the players, be it WiMAX, fixed and cellular, the 50% penetration rate will not be achievable.
It stands at 25% currently.
Packet One has the widest roll-out while REDtone offers services in parts of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching, and Asiaspace has 70 to 80 locations covered in the Klang Valley.
The only company yet to roll out services on WiMAX platform is YTL e-Solutions but its director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong said “we will be ahead of our target to cover 50% of the population by July 1 next year.’’
While YTL e-Solutions is the latecomer in terms o f roll-out, Yeoh said it was working with Samsung, Clearwire and Cisco for a nationwide rollout on July 1, 2010.
REDtone is the only company with the WiMAX licence to cover Sabah and Sarawak.
“We have done our part and will do our best. We are committed to the national broadband agenda and apart from the interest of business we also recognise this as an important national service. The cost of rolling out services in Sabah and Sarawak in our experience is two to three times more than rolling it out in Peninsular Malaysia; that is why we see it as doing national service.
“Our service is available in parts of Kota Kinabalu and Kuching and we have plans t o cover more towns,’’ said group chief executive officer Zainal Amanshah.
Asiaspace chairman Datuk Abdul Ghani said the company had fully covered 25% o f the population required of it this year.
“We have acquired 138 base station sites, of which 61 are ‘on air.’
“We are waiting to install the remaining 77 as we have not got approvals from the local authorities, owners of land and buildings, and all that is a tedious process,” Ghani said.

Green Packet eyes 2 WiMAX jobs abroad

GREEN Packet Bhd aims to secure two WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) contracts in the Middle East and Taiwan before the end of next month.
Group managing director and chief executive officer Puan Chan Cheong, however, did not disclose the value of the contracts.
The company earlier this year was awarded a contract from PCCW, the largest communications service provider in Hong Kong.
Its WiMAX coverage, which now extends to 15 per cent of the country, is projected to hit 40 per cent by the end of 2009 with more than 250,000 subscribers expected.
To reach the target, Green Packet plans to have 700 sites by the end of this year from about 220 sites now.
“The first phase will be rolling out close to 600 sites. This is the US$72 million contract that we awarded to Alcatel-Lucent. We hope to award the second phase of another 400 sites before the end of this quarter,” he said.
Another 300 sites will be build next year, Puan said, adding that RM270 million will be spent for the first and second phases this year.
Last year, it spent RM170 million to roll out half of the first phase.
Meanwhile, Green Packet Bhd suffered a pre-tax loss
of RM57.759 million for the financial year ended December 31, 2008 compared to a pre-tax profit of RM30.992 million in the same period in 2007.
Revenue fell to RM88.427 million from RM122.836 million previously. — Bernama

PULAU PINANG - Wireless Internet surfing via WiMAX will be a reality in Penang as early as December 2008, as part of the state government’s move to ensure that the island state becomes an "i-Land" by 2010. Today’s announcement is also part of Packet One (P1)’s expansion of its WiMAX broadband service nationwide.
The Penang State Government and P1 today entered into a partnership for P1 to supply the infrastructure for WiMAX@Penang under the Wireless@Penang initiative to bring the state’s infrastructure offerings to a higher level.
Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Lim Guan Eng said, "We are all responsible for continuously driving the state of Penang forward. We need to take the next natural course of action in order to further improve the standard of living of the people here. The wide availability of WiMAX in Penang will certainly provide a welcome boost to the existing and future industries."
"With this project, Penang will be the one of the first few WiMAX states in the world. And for Malaysia, we are taking another step closer towards making Malaysia a WiMAX hub in the region," CEO of P1, Michael Lai informed.
The first phase of WiMAX@Penang project will commence in October 2008, with the deployment of P1 base stations to cover areas around George Town, Penang Island, and Seberang Prai. The targeted areas are based on the highest population density and commercial viability.
The partnership with the Penang State Government is slated to expedite the Phase 1 rollout of WiMAX@Penang to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2009.
"With this partnership announcement, P1 is keeping to its promise of delivering wireless broadband via WiMAX to Malaysians. As the first WiMAX telco in Malaysia and one of the first in the world, we hope to contribute positively to the economic development of Penang as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia," Lai informed.
"P1’s deployments of the iconic Wireless@KL (May 2008) and Wireless@Sunway (July 2008) initiatives to bridge the digital divide of Malaysians are our notable WiMAX milestones. Y-Max begins broadband rollout

Y-MAX Networks Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of YTL e-Solutions Bhd (YTL-e), has started to roll out its services to selected businesses in the Bukit Bintang area of Kuala Lumpur.
The company recently announced an introductory service that is focused on providing high-speed enterprise data and wireless Internet broadband access to a selected number of corporate customers.
According to Y-Max, subscribers can currently enjoy speeds of up to 2Mbps (megabits per second) and are charged between RM80 and RM160 a month.
“The service is now being deployed at two five-star hotels and a cafe in Bukit Bintang,” a company spokesman said. YTL-e said the service is being offered to a limited number of corporations in order to get valuable feedback that will help it improve its full-scale WiMAX service rollout.
The spokesman added that Y-Max chose to deploy its services in the Bukit Bintang area because its headquarters is located there.
“It is also a high-profile business area and fits in very well with our plan to offer our WiMAX Enterprise Connectivity service to businesses,” he said.
YTL-e plans to roll-out a WiMAX broadband service for home users once it has established an extensive WiMAX network coverage area.
However, the company could not confirm when this will be ready.
