Will YTL’s ‘Yes’ affect Green Packet?
KUALA LUMPUR: When a new player enters a market, the ground moves. More so when the new entrant is a deep-pocketed giant like YTL Corp Bhd, backed by one of Malaysia’s richest tycoons, Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.
It comes as little surprise then that the recent entry of YTL Communications Bhd into the WiMAX market has affected investor confidence in Green Packet Bhd, the parent company of the country’s first WiMAX operator, P1. But will the landscape change? Is this akin to David versus Goliath, although the David in this case — Green Packet — had a first mover advantage?
Fears of YTL’s entry adversely affecting Green Packet has sent the latter’s shares slumping.
Green Packet, led by CEO Puan Chan Cheong (left), is feeling the heat after the entry of YTL Comms, backed by Yeoh’s YTL Corp, into the WiMAX domain. Its stock has fallen to close at 79.5 sen last Friday.
Green Packet’s shares traded within a range of 90 sen to RM1.03 from July until early November, before falling since the middle of last month to 79.5 sen last Friday, just off a 12-month low of 78 sen. That’s nearly half of its 52-week high of RM1.52 set in January.
To be sure, the recent share price drop also coincides with weakness in the broader market as investors take money off the table amid rising uncertainty in the global economy due to the sovereign debt crisis in the eurozone and geopolitical risks on the Korean peninsula.
Still, it would appear that sentiment for the stock was affected, at least in part, by the launch of YTL Comms’ Yes mobile broadband-cum-voice service on Nov 19. This is not surprising since YTL Comms operates on the same platform as P1 and, thus,
is naturally viewed as a close competitor. And it is a formidable one at that with its deep pockets.
Case in point, although late to the market, YTL Comms has been impressive with the pace of its network rollout, achieving 65% population coverage right off the bat with some 1,500 base station sites installed over the course of the year. The company claims to have spent RM2.5 billion in total capital expenditure to-date and plans to add another 1,000 sites to bring coverage up to 80% by end-2011.
By comparison, P1 has paced its rollout in lockstep with the growth of its subscriber base. As at end-September — two years and three months after its commercial launch — the company had 815 sites after spending a total of RM534 million since its launch. It is targeting to hit 1,050 sites by the end of this year. That would bring its coverage to just about 45% of the population.
Meanwhile P1 has said it intends to spend another RM500 million in capital expenditure on an additional 1,500 sites, which will expand its coverage to 65% by 2012.
Having said that, YTL Comms’ pricing strategy suggests that it is targeting a different market segment than P1.
Yes is offering a flat rate of nine sen for either a minute of voice call, an SMS or 3Mb of data. This pay-as-you-use pricing model is ideal for casual surfers and, in particular, the mobile broadband market segment where the average data consumption is estimated at roughly 2Gb to 3Gb per month.
P1’s primary target market, on the other hand, is the fixed-broadband segment — currently accounting for an estimated 90% of its subscriber base — where users are much more data intensive.
The average data consumption is estimated at more than 10Gb per month. YTL Comms may not be a cost-effective competitor in the fixed-broadband market, now dominated by Telekom Malaysia’s Streamyx and P1. For instance, based on YTL Comms’ rates, 10Gb of data will cost some RM210 compared with P1’s RM99 per month package that comes with 20Gb of fair usage, albeit at a much slower connection speed.
Yes a strong mobile
broadband competitor
The mobile broadband segment is a rapidly growing market. To achieve true mobility, wide coverage is required. As such, the main players at present are the cellular operators, who have their GPRS/EDGE networks to fall back on outside of 3G coverage areas.
Celcom, Maxis and DiGi collectively added some 672,000 new mobile broadband subscribers in the first nine months of this year, compared with less than 260,000 new subscribers for fixed broadband over the same period. Currently, there are roughly 1.6 million mobile broadband subscribers in the country.
Growth in this market segment is expected to continue at a rapid clip for the foreseeable future, driven by rising affordability and ownership of laptops and netbooks, coupled with the need for connectivity on the go. Most recently, the success of Apple’s iPad has further reinvigorated consumer demand for the tablets market segment.
Like the cellular operators, YTL Comms offers the Yes Go USB dongle for users to connect to its network. In addition, it also sells the Yes Huddle, a Mi-Fi wireless router that connects up to five devices. Its pay-as-you-use pricing is attractive for data usage of up to roughly 3Gb, which is the average mobile broadband data consumption.
Plus, YTL Comms’ WiMAX network boasts three to five times the speed of 3G networks operated by all the cellular players. Anecdotal evidence in the early days supports this claim, although it remains to be seen if the high speeds can be maintained as the number of users on its network grows.
P1 too has set its sights on the mobile broadband market. But with comparatively low network coverage, it has yet to make a major push in this direction — although this would certainly happen over the next year or two. The company has the launch of a Mi-Fi device slated in 1Q2011 and is at present, bundling its portable W1GGY modem with its home broadband packages.
Elsewhere, although YTL Comms is offering very attractive voice and SMS rates complete with a 018-prefix, take-up rates may not be high in the near to medium term due to the lack of WiMAX handsets.
For a start, it will be selling the Yes Buzz handset, manufactured by Samsung, later this month and plans to introduce a smartphone sometime next year. But the lack of choice will certainly be a hindrance. User migration for voice services has also been very sticky, even with the introduction of mobile number portability.
P1 sticking to 280,000 subscribers target by end-2010
Despite the entry of Yes into the market, P1 remains confident, with just one more month to go, that it will hit the target subscriber base of 280,000 by the end of the year.
New sign-ups in 4Q2010 have been boosted by its new marketing campaign, which was launched in late October. Indeed, anecdotal evidence shows that subscriber acquisitions, which had dropped in the run-up to the Yes launch, picked up pace again over the past week.
At this pace, Green Packet has said it believes it is on track to achieve operating break-even by 1Q2011. The company has been registering lower earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) losses for the past three consecutive quarters on the back of a growing subscriber base and revenue contribution. Average revenue per user is holding steady at about RM80 to RM81 per month.
To be sure, P1 is still grappling with its fair share of problems with network congestion. But market observers are optimistic it will be able to hold its own in the increasingly competitive broadband market. The ability to bundle fixed and mobile broadband services at an attractive cost per megabit is a strong advantage, particularly once the company expands its coverage area to 65% of the population by 2012.
Separately, the company’s software and solutions business has been doing well on the back of rising worldwide sales for its licences and “Customer Premise Equipment” (CPE). The company has sold nearly as many CPE in the first nine months of this year — with sales of over 231,000 units — as the whole of 2009. It has orders in hand for over 530,000 units. The company is also upbeat on the progress made in the lucrative US software market, which it hopes will come to fruition next year.
Rising contributions from the software and solutions arm will help bolster the company’s bottom line.

Cashier charged with stealing from bank
GEORGE TOWN: A bank’s chief cashier was charged with stealing RM910,000 from the bank he worked in at Bishop Street here on Oct 18.
The accused, Mohd Nasir Ismail, 46, who was accompanied by several family members in the court room, was released on a RM8,000 bail on Wednesday.
Deputy public prosecutor Pang Chun Keat initially called for RM10,000 bail but the accused’s counsel, R.S.N. Rayer, asked to reduce bail to RM5,000 as his client had four school-going children.
The magistrate's court settled for RM8,000 and magistrate Nor Aini Yusof fixed Nov 22 for submission of documents.
Mohd Nasir, from Sungai Petani, was dressed in a white shirt and appeared calm in the court room.
He is charged under Section 381 of the Penal Code for theft, which carries a jail term up to seven years and a fine.
The suspect and an administrative assistant were detained by police on Oct 20 for allegedly stealing a total of RM1.5mil from the bank's strongroom.
It was reported that the administrative assistant, also aged 46, was released on police bail and had agreed to cooperate with the police.
The theft was uncovered when bank officials discovered the missing money and lodged a police report on Oct 19.
A packet containing RM90,000 was found on the lower ground floor of the bank while another packet of RM500,000 was recovered on the second floor.
Another RM860,000 was later retrieved from a bowling bag at a bowling alley in Sungai Petani.

Take up long-term housing loans, buyers told
PETALING JAYA: Home buyers are encouraged to take up two-generation loans and financial institutions should support the move.
“The most important thing is for the individual to own a house for his family to live in.
“If loan repayment is extended to the second generation, that means the family will remain intact,” Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Chor Chee Heung told a press conference here yesterday.
He had earlier launched the MBSB Ultimate mortgage programme by Malaysia Building Society Bhd, which offers loans for customers up to the age of 70 years.
Chor said Budget 2011 encouraged the two-generation loan term, refuting suggestions that stretching the loans that far would be a burden to the younger family members.
“I don’t think it is a burden for the next generation because the repayment is spread over a long time,” he said, adding that the younger generation is financially strong and can even afford to buy another house.
MBSB chief executive officer Datuk Ahmad Zaini Ithman said the idea of offering longer-term housing loans was to preserve the value of assets or investments.
“Ownership in the past meant buying for investment. But now, a house is a place for the family to stay.
“I think more financial institutions should pursue this approach,” he said.

YTL Comms WiMAX launch may not be on time
KUALA LUMPUR: YTL Communications Bhd’s (YTL Comms) November commercial launch date for its WiMAX service may not be met if it does not get the necessary network interconnection with the other four cellular players on time.
The interconnection agreements with the four cellular companies have been signed. A two-month period is needed for the execution.
“The only thing that could stop us from doing the November launch is the interconnection,’’ said YTL Comms executive director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong.
Interconnection is vital since YTL Comms will offer data and voice connectivity, and the cellular prefix allotted to YTL Comms is 018. If all goes as planned, about 65% of the population in the country will be covered by YTL Comms’ WiMAX network at the point of the commercial launch.
Wing K. Lee
YTL Comms was supposed to launch the service in July but now the dateline has been pushed to November. But YTL Comms CEO Wing K. Lee (pic) claims that the July dateline was only for a soft launch and not a commercial launch and the latter will be in November.
“We have been testing our network for a while now and we are very much on track on our network built-up,’’ Lee told StarBiz recently.
Sadly, the service will not be available in east Malaysia for the licence that YTL Comms has is for Peninsular Malaysia and that does not allow it to roll out services in Sabah and Sarawak as well.
But YTL Comms is hoping it would land itself with the extension into east Malaysia. It is still holding talks with the regulator on the matter.
“It is part of the country and it needs to have good connectivity (as well),’’ Lee added.
He would not talk on pricing plans and on the speed of transmission, he would merely say “it will be five times better than 3G and it will come in multiple of megabits.’’
Converged services is what YTL Comms is working towards launching. That means you can have voice, video, data – all in one offering. The devices are being tested and by the time the service is available, the devices will be offered in the market place.
Whether or not the interconnection comes on time, YTL Comms would go ahead with its plans with an educational programme of what WiMAX can do and what to expect at the launch date.
YTL Comms is investing RM2.5bil to bring converged services to the market place. It is working with several partners such as Cisco, Samsung, Clearwire, CGT Semiconductors to bring the service. It also has a tie-up with Telekom Malaysia Bhd and Fiberail for backhaul operations.

Rating: | |
Category: | Other |
一把辛酸泪;

Record car sales expected this year
MAA optimistic due to 19.8% rise in the first six months
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) has revised upwards its 2010 total industry volume (TIV) forecast to 570,000 units from 550,000 units initially due to the stellar sales performance in the first half of the year.
The TIV in the first half grew 19.8% to 301,077 units compared with 251,305 units in the previous corresponding period.
The revised forecast, if achieved, means the Malaysian automotive industry is headed for a record-breaking year in terms of sales, surpassing its all-time high of 552,316 units in 2005.
MAA president Datuk Aishah Ahmad said the TIV growth in the second half was unlikely to be as strong as the first six months, and that the recent fuel price hike and increase in interest rates would have a minimal impact on the TIV.
»Our fuel prices are still the cheapest in the region« DATUK AISHAH AHMAD
She also said the impact on the TIV would be minimal if any further increase in fuel price and interest rates was marginal.
“A further increase in interest rates is possible. If the increase is 25 basis points the impact won’t be much,” she told a briefing yesterday.
“A further increase in fuel prices may not affect the overall TIV but car buyers may downsize to cheaper vehicles.
“Our fuel prices are still the cheapest in the region.”
Earlier this month, Bank Negara raised the overnight policy rates by 25 basis points to 2.75%.
Last week, the Government announced the increase of RON95 petrol price by five sen per litre to RM1.85, while RON97 would no longer be subsidised. The diesel prices rose by five sen per litre to RM1.75.
The multiplier effects of projects from the 10th Malaysia Plan would boost the economy and create demand for new vehicles, Aishah said, adding that the positive consumer sentiment was expected to continue owing to greater stability in the employment market.
She said outstanding orders carried over from the first half would be fulfilled in the second half of 2010.
Aishah also said the MAA had been lobbying the Government to extend incentives for not only hybrid and electric vehicles, but also all types of vehicles that cater to this segment.
For the first six months of 2010, total production volume increased by 27.8% to 293,783 compared with 229,842 units in the same period last year.
Aishah said the higher production volume was to cater to the improvement in sales of motor vehicles in the period.
The MAA also reported that motor vehicle sales for June rose 19.4% to 54,005 units from 45,245 in the same month last year as business conditions and consumer sentiment continued to be positive.
It said the sales increase was also due to buyers rushing to take delivery of their vehicles before the hike in interest rates.
On the outlook for July, MAA said the year-on-year growth would continue to expand, but the month-on-month volume would be maintained as outstanding orders had already been fulfilled.
Summary of "The Present"
This book explains very common yet powerful concept in very simple manner. The crux of the book is how to live in the present while learning from the past and planning for the future to achieve happiness in work and personal life. It explains The Present (gift) is not the past, and not the future, it is the present moment, it is ‘now’. It means to focus and pay attention to what is happening right now. Usually when you are in the office, you think where else you might enjoy working more, or what you will do when you go home. When you are in the meeting or chatting with friends, your mind wanders somewhere else. So this concept explains very powerful strategy to focus on the present moment and concentrate on the activity which is happening in that moment.
Now focusing on present doesn’t mean that you should forget the past. Everybody does some mistakes in the past but you shouldn’t keep worrying about it. You might keep thinking about those past mistakes in the present and may spoil the present. It is hard to let go of the past if you have not learned from the past. As soon as you learn from your mistakes, you can easily let that go away and move on in the present. Once you learn from the past, it is easy to enjoy in the present, which eventually enhances your performance in the present. When you are feeling unhappy in the present, then it is time to learn from the past or plan the future.
The common behavior of people is to live in the future and get anxious about the events in the future. This book explains that we should plan for the future but we should not live in the future. Only way we can make our future better than our present is to plan for the future. Planning for future reduces the uncertainty, anxiety and fear about future events as you are actively working on your plan to achieve your goals in the future. So we should visualize a wonderful future, create a realistic plan to help it happen and then take actions in the present to achieve the desired success.
It also explains living in the present, learning from the past, and planning for the future is not all there is. It is only when you live with the purpose, and respond to what’s important about the present, past and future, has all the meaning. Living with purpose means not only knowing what to do, but also understanding why to do. It means rising each day and seeing what meaning it will hold for you and for others as a result of your actions.

Summary of "The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People"
THE TWO SIDES OF SUCCESS
........................................................................................................................
Aesop's fable,
The Goose and the Golden Egg, is the story of a poor farmer who one day finds a glittering, golden egg in the nest of his goose. Though he is suspicious, he takes the egg home and learns, to his delight, that the egg is pure gold. Every morning thereafter, the farmer gathers one golden egg from the nest of his goose. He soon becomes fabulously wealthy. As he grows rich, however, he also grows greedy and impatient with only one golden egg a day. Attempting to seize all the gold in the goose at once, he slaughters it, only to find nothing. The moral of this fable has personal and professional application. Like the foolish farmer, we often push production (golden eggs) at the expense of what makes us capable to produce (the goose). Often we are more concerned with efficiency than with effectiveness. In attempts to be efficient, we overlook effectiveness and destroy our capability for getting results.
THE EMOTIONAL BANK ACCOUNT
™........................................................................................................................
The Emotional Bank Account is a powerful metaphor that relates the amount of trust in a relationship. The metaphor suggests that every interaction with another human being can be classified as a deposit or withdrawal in that person's trust. For example, you make deposits in another's trust by showing kindness, keeping promises, honoring expectations, proving loyalty, and making apologies. In other words, you put something into a relationship. You build and you repair. While small things build trust, small things also destroy trust. Unkindness, breaking promises, violating expectations, showing duplicity, and being proud are withdrawals that take away from a relationship.
FORMING HABITS
........................................................................................................................
In this summary, we introduce The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People− habits used consistently by people who achieve desired results. Habits are patterns of behavior that involve three overlapping components: desire, knowledge, and skill. Because these three components are learned rather than inherited, effective habits can be learned and ineffective habits can be unlearned.
As illustrated in the Maturity Continuum®, the Seven Habits are interrelated, interdependent, and sequential. Using the habits, individuals work on the Private Victory™ (or self-mastery with Habits 1, 2, and 3) before moving to the Public Victory™ (building relationships with Habits 4, 5, and 6): to lead others effectively, individuals must first be able to lead themselves effectively. The seventh habit is the habit of renewal; it sustains physical, social/emotional, mental, and spiritual growth.
HABIT 1: BE PROACTIVE
®…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The habit of personal vision.
Each person has the power to make his or her own decisions. When individuals use this power to choose their responses according to self-determined values, they are proactive. In other words, proactive people use a margin of freedom to make choices that best apply their values. As they work on things they can control (their Circle of Influence™) in lieu of reacting to or worrying about conditions over which they have little or no control (their Circle of Concern™), they use positive energy to influence conditions and increase their Circle of Influence.
HABIT 2: BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
®........................................................................................................................
The habit of personal leadershi
p. The most effective people shape their own futures. They benefit from beginning with the end in mind in all areas of life. Instead of letting other people or circumstances determine their results, they carefully plan who they want to be, what they want to do, and what they want to have, and then they let their mental plan guide their decisions. This mental plan for their life's purpose expressed in written form is called a mission statement. A person who has a mission statement and uses it to guide decisions will live in harmony with his or her self-determined purpose.
HABIT 3: PUT FIRST THINGS FIRST
®........................................................................................................................
The habit of personal management.
What are first things? First things are those things that we, personally, find most worth doing. They move us in the right direction. They help us achieve the principle-centered purpose expressed in our mission statement.First things are always important and are sometimes urgent:
•
•
Urgent. An activity is urgent if you or others feel that it requires immediate attention. When we graph these two elements and their opposites, four quadrants emerge which describe the activities we engage in (see graphic). These quadrants form the Time Management Matrix.
The best use of our time focuses on the quadrants that emphasize importance. Of these two quadrants, our primary focus should be on Quadrant II, through which we can pursue excellence in our work and in our relationships.
HABIT 4: THINK WIN-WIN
™........................................................................................................................
The habit of interpersonal leadership.
Think Win-Win is a frame of mind and heart that constantly seeks mutual benefit in all human interactions. Win-win means everyone wins because agreements or solutions are mutually beneficial and satisfying-all parties feel good about the decision and feel committed to the action plan.A win-win person possesses three character traits: integrity, maturity, and an Abundance Mentality.™ People of integrity are true to their feelings, values, and commitments. Mature people express their ideas and feelings with courage and with consideration for the ideas and feelings of others. People with an Abundance Mentality believe there is plenty for everyone.
HABIT 5: SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD
™........................................................................................................................
The habit of communication.
When we listen with the intent to understand, our interpersonal communications are more effective. We quit sifting everything through our own paradigms and stop reading our autobiographies into other people's lives. By setting aside autobiographical responses and caring about what the other person is trying to communicate, we are better prepared to listen empathically− with an intent to understand. The second part of the habit, seek to be understood, takes courage and skill. You need courage to express your true feelings and be open. You need skill to clearly
and accurately express your point from the other's frame of reference.
HABIT 6: SYNERGIZE
®........................................................................................................................
The habit of creative cooperation.
Redwoods, whose root systems are shallow, grow close together. Their roots interlock and keep the trees from toppling when heavy winds come. Two working cooperatively have the potential to multiply the results of each working separately. This principle, Synergize, also holds true in social interactions. Two people, creatively cooperating and interacting interdependently, will be able to accomplish more than the sum of what they could accomplish separately. As they value each other's differences, open themselves to new possibilities, practice Think Win-Win, and build trust, they reap the benefits of synergizing.
HABIT 7: SHARPEN THE SAW
®........................................................................................................................
The habit of self-renewal.
Dulled by use, a saw's serrated edge can no longer cut through wood. The blade is not in the proper condition to saw effectively. To function effectively, people need to Sharpen the Saw. In other words, they need to preserve and improve themselves. The key to sharpening the saw is to regularly and consistently work on all four dimensions of renewal: physical, social/emotional, spiritual, and mental. Bodies and minds exerted on a regular basis are prepared for exertion. Conscience, consistently listened to and followed, becomes increasingly sensitive. Relationships, loyally attended to, grow. As individuals balance and sharpen all four dimensions, they improve heir effectiveness in all of the habits. In so doing, they grow, change, and improve. Conclusion
During the Seven Habits seminar, you are encouraged to share your experience, learning, and insight with the group. The differing experiences and perspectives of all people attending your seminar will expand your learning and enable you to learn things together that you would be much less likely to discover on your own.

62 firearms belonging to Police missing
Datuk Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, the Home Minister reported to the Dewan Rakyat that the Royal Malaysian Police Force had since 2001 recorded losing 62 firearms. This is made up of 36 semi-automatic pistols, 51 revolvers and 2 sub-machine guns. He said this in his written reply to Tian Chua, the Member of Parliament of Batu where he added that of the total, only 28 have been recovered. Those that are recovered are 24 revolvers and 4 semi-automatic pistols while the rest were never found.
He added that “Logistic equipment under the police inventory consisted seven categories: watercraft, radio equipment, firearms and ammunition, vehicles, aircraft, technical assistance equipment and information technology systems. From the above categories, two categories which frequently face problems are vehicles and firearms,”

Low Cost Scam
Petaling Jaya City Council Planning director Sharipah Marhaini Syed Ali declared that the RM2,500 monthly salary threshold for eligibility is arrived at after deducting expenses. We have some tips on how to use the “household
expenses” to circumvent the limit, by declaring the following:
RM3,000 for car (BMW) instalment;
RM1,800 for two maids;
RM2,400 for driver cum gardener;
RM2,000 for monthly groceries including imported Perrier water;
RM1,000 for pets’ food and grooming;
RM3,000 for son’s study at an international school;
RM2,000 for daughter’s Montessori classes.

Jalan Tun Razak
